I often fall into the trap of believing that a job is going to be accomplished quickly and easily. Case in point - following several hours of work over the last 2 days this is what my basket of scraps looks like now. It almost looks like there is more than I started with. Hubby says it's just 'fluffed up' from me digging around, but I was beginning to feel a bit disheartened.

Then I captured some of what has been dealt with so far. There is a stack of 2 1/2" strips, a healthy pile of 5" squares, a basket of 1 1/2" strips, another basket with scraps to use in applique, a few pieces that qualified to be folded up as fat quarters, and some 1" strips that can't be seen here.

Here are all the pieces for the next quilt I plan to do from this book.

Another 50 5" squares that will be re-cut into 2 1/2" squares for a project I'll be starting this week. I guess I did get a lot done, there's just a lot more to be done.

While the rain continued yesterday, Harper did perk up some once she was in charge of the remote control. She does become very pleased with herself when she gets in my chair.

Here is a picture of my pitiful ironing board cover. I got this large ironing board at Costco a number of years ago and very carefully saved the information on how to get a replacement cover. When I decided that I was ready to place an order a couple of years back, I learned that they are no longer made. Now I'm a quilter, that's for sure, but rather than figure out how to make a new cover I went for the easy fix - iron on patches. It's a pitiful sight to behold, but it works just dandy. I'm due for another installment of new patches soon. It's easy to do and allows me to spend my sewing time with fun fabrics.

I bring all this up because I recently read a blog (sorry, I don't remember which blog) where she apologized for her ugly ironing board. So here's the deal. In honor of Leap Year and
Sadie Hawkins Day, share a picture of your ironing board and leave comment on this post. On February 29th at 8 p.m. Pacific time, I'll draw a name for a little give away. Please remember to post a photo and make sure I have a way to contact you via email.

You got lots done...you should be very pleased with yourself.
That's sure a lot more than I g ot out of a days cutting from scraps. 4 piles of bricks for a braid I'm making for borders of a quilt.
I'll get a picture up of my ironing board or what you can see of it. As soon as Kim can get it on my blog.
Oh yes, just ironing all the scraps from some of the bags took hours! It's always facinating finding a scrap system. I see some that I would fold right up and stick back into my piles, but then my piles look a mess half the time!
Almost bought a basket for good scraps today and decided it would most likely end up a kitty sleeping basket!
Hmmm, I may have a mess in my quilt basement, but my ironing board is actually decent looking! You got so much done!
Yep, you got lots done, regardless of how the scrap basket looks! I'm really liking your doll quilt book...and the little quilts you're making.
I say we should all chip in and get you a couple new covers for that ironing board. LOL!!! That's hysterical!! No, I'm not laughing, sorry. Ok, I am. LOL!!!
I think you have way too much time on your hands. Did you love my grandson eating sandwich with his chopsticks! He is a clever boy! Colleen
I will get a picture om my ironing board later today. Great challenge LOL
My scrapbasket also seems to explode from time to time.
Got my picture of my ironing board posted and 2 links to tutorials to make new ironing board covers...for those that might be interested. :o)
wow that is fantastic..you got a lot done! Love the ironing board cover! I will have to take a picture of mine and post it..maybe today.
Glad your puppy is smiling now!
Oh yeah, I feel your irnoning board pain. Lol* Although you have an excuse...see, I'm just lazy. I finally kept getting my scissors and iron stuck in the rips in my cover, so I made a make shift one out of some yucky fabric I had laying around. I'm still to lazy to go to the dollar store and buy a cover though. I never thought of iron on patches...thanks, now I'll never have to buy a cover!!! LOL***
I just bought a new ironing board cover and I love it so I will get a picture later today.
I think I need to go through my fabrics and do some cutting too - it would sure make those scrap projects go more quickly.
Looks to me you are making great head way on that scrap basket!
Okay I will bite on posting a picture of my ironing board cover LOL... I tend to make new ones not patch but to be honest I never thought of patching LOL...I would say your ironing board cover is well used LOL and Loved I am sure LOL
Count me in, I'll go take pics now, and I bet I win the oldest, nastiest, and most crippled! My DH has threatened to buy a new one for years, but this is mine, and I love it!
thanks for sharing,
lyn
Lovely ironing board! Obviously it gets a lot of mileage. I always have a towel over mine to take the abuse, since I am usually ironing small pieces. Then I can just toss the towel in the washer. Hey, I could make money with that tip! Can I use your photo for the "before" shot?
You can see my before and after ironing board here:
http://iliketomakestuff.blogspot.com/2008/01/new-ironing-board-cover.html
My old one was DISGUSTING, blech.
Wow, what lovelies you have cut up there!!! You got LOTS done, girlfriend! I'll have to go take a pic of my ironing board(s)! ;D Harper looks like the Queen of the Remote...Dewey and Badger are jealous, they so rarely get the remote from Dad. LOL
Love the idea of the ironing board image swap. Here's mine:
http://ahbrooke.blogspot.com/2008/02/ironing-board-confession.html. Keep making quilts - who cares about the state of our tools! take care.
Ok my picture is up. You really did get a lot done, but you can't turn your back on those scrap I tell ya, they're like little bunnies!!
Libby, that has to be the worst ironing board cover I have ever seen, lol. I think there may be something growing under those patches. Oh dear, I am laughing so hard! I am impressed with your piles of strips, patches, etc, but the ironing board just blows me away, ROFLOL!!!!
Since I just posted a hand quilted finish today and will not have time to post another. I will let you know my ironing board is made of 1970's alvacado green with a replacement top that now needs to be replaced. My irioing board is as old as I am. May just maybe I will finally replace the top cover. LAst time I looked at what they cost I decided mine was not taht bad. Thanks for the post!
Scraps . . . yup, as I was unpacking my studio I found enough scraps to fill a U-Haul three-foot square box. Ugh! I guess I need to have a cutting party.
I'd take a picture of my ironing board, but it's still folded up and put away.
Love your blog entry...ironing boards seem to be the last thing to get the attention LOL! Does it count that my ironing board was featured in my blog entry on Feb. 19, but because it is so disgusting I hid the ~yuck~ with clothes to be ironed, and then a better shot with quilt blocks AND MY IRON :>)!!
The overflowing scrap bins is very typical at my house, actually that made it for a blog entry for me a while back! GOTTA LOVE HOW MUCH QUILTERS THINK ALIKE! Have a great day!
I wonder what will be your next project from this book! You are very clever cutting and organizing scraps. Impressing.
You got a lot accomplished with sorting your scrap basket and now your are ready for another project. Now I'd say you probably should have replaced that cover long long ago. I did replace mine a couple months ago and really cheaped out and bought the cheapest one at Walmart.
You did get lots done!!
I will post a pic of my ironing board(s) tomorrow. They are pretty gross.
Can't wait to see the next Prairie Children quilt!
Don't be disheartened over your scrap basket! I try to iron and cut an hour a week to gain some control over Scrapasaurus~ The scalloped edge on your quilt came out gorgeous!!
and better the rain than the 10 inches of snow we got on Friday. but I was happy me & hubby played hooky from work.! iz
Libby, I love your iron board! *S*
Mine was just like yours. then my friend bought me a new one. I think She couldn't take it.*LOL*
Great blog and pictures. I just happened to get a cute shot of my kitty on my ironing board recently. He likes it up there where he can see everything going on. :)
You have made a lot of progress with your scraps Libby. I've tried to do that, but then I get anxious that the fabric I cut into a 3 inch square, really needs to be 2 x 4 Inches when I go to use it. Glad Harper is feeling better - Simon sleeps on the couch but isn't much good at selecting programs.
Wow, you've gotten alot done and are ready for new projects. Let the fun begin! :-)
Ironing board covers don't have a chance with us quilters. LOL Keep patching, my friend. :-)
OK-- I've committed. I've taken a photo of my AWFUL ironing board cover. I've got to get it posted. (I reallycan't believe I'm doing this ~~~~~~~~)
I am not even going to enter the ironing board give-away, because I think that yours is already the winner. lol That is the saddest ironing board that I have ever seen. ROFLOL I mean this in the very nicest of ways.
You do have the best scraps though. Must be why you make such gorgeous quilts!!!
You are so organized with you scraps! I need to come up with a scrap system, mine just is not working for me.
I love how you have patched up your ironing board cover - I will have to do that for mine. Thanks for the wonderful idea. I have posted a picture on my blog.
Target still sells an oversized ironing board cover even though they no long sell the oversized boards. Bummer - I never got mine.
Love to see your ironingboard...I have recently exchanged my cover...but in some strange way...it´s not so fresh any more...it´s beginning to be brown and messy AGAIN...how can I avoid that...towel or what??? I have posted a picture on my blog...
Love to see what will become of your strips and squares..;D
I have posted a picture of my ironing board. You've made great progress with your scraps.
I just love the quilts from Prairie Children, ok so I've posted my ugly ironing board cover....lol...
Libby, you're what we used to call back in High School (that's a lot of years ago, darlin') a Card! For years I had this heavy ironing board that was Sears Top-of-the-line. It could be adjusted and had an iron holder at the bottom end that pulled out to put your hot iron. At last it rusted out. Was I ever glad. Now I've got the Target store model.
OK, I can't resist a draw... Here you go - what excitement!
Kate's ironing board
okay, here's mine, Libby though I have to say that it is spotless compared to your poor thing.
Isn't that a pain in the butt when they can't continue to make the replacements we need? Do they really think we are going to keep replacing the ironing board when we can't find something to use on it?
Way to go sorting through the fabrics and getting them to a usable point, Libby.
I'm wondering if it could be my ugly ironing board cover you're remembering. Here's the post where I talked about it.

Even if it doesn't look familiar, I am posting another photo of said ironing board cover on my blog, although it is under some postcards but you'll get the idea. Please enter my name in your drawing.
Thanks!
Can you come over and organize my scraps or at least make some sense out of them? You sure did alot....I have posted a pic of my poor ironing board, however it doesn't look so pitiful after looking at yours again...LOL but it still could use some help or better to be replaced...
HUGS
Kathy
Saw your ironing board post on Kate's blog, thought I'd join in the fun. Feel free to comment on my blog, I am offering something as well. http://vickyscreativespace.blogspot.com/
I used to have an ironing board like that but Ikea saved me! LOL I posted a photo. :-)
Just realized my post might sound cheeky, only meant you must have twice as many hours in your day as I do....you are so darn productive!Wish I had an ironing board to post a photo of....mine is in storage...Just using a towel on the counter at moment. Colleen
Okay, I'm posting a photo of my ironing board on my blog tonight because (1) it's a slow day and I don't have a lot of other stuff in mind to blog about and (2) people can always use a good laugh. I swear mine is really, really BAD. And not in a good, "hey, man, that's really baaaaad," sort of way, either!
I have posted a picture of my ironing board....
its at the end of my latest post
Okay...I'll play, too. I've posted a picture of my ironing board in the sewing room. It actually looks a lot better in the pix than in person :)
ROFL - Libby, what a great, fun idea! I've had a ball looking at nasty old ironing boards!!!
Today I have got the "make my day Award", which I would give to you, because I like your blogsite.
Hugs,
Gabriele
Well, I've come to the realization that scraps multiply while you're not looking! Oh, and they come out when some have left! ;o) I love my ironing board. I think it's an antique. A friend of mine found it in a home she had bought hidden between beams. She had no use for it, being a lover of new things and gladly offered it to me. I love it! So I make my own covers. I'll have to blog about it! Thanks for the challenge! Cheers!
I have taken up your challenge and I have done a posing of my ironing board...you must be proud of your new pressed piles of fabrics!!!!
This is a lot of cutting. I do think that you need a new cover on your ironing board :)
I got a whole post about my mundane ironing board. Can you believe it? My scrap buckets are also bulging, but my mini group is doing a string quilt and I, good Samaritan that I am, volunteered some scraps for the project. I'm hoping that the level in both buckets (lights and darks) decreases.
You have been very busy, but definitely in need of a new board cover. I just recently replaced mine so it looks pretty good!
I love my scrap baskets (note that I said baskets and not basket)!
Your ironing board cover certainly is a winner! I have a new one on mine. Patching was a great idea.
I just love blog giveaways and hope to win yours. I have posted a photo of my ironing board on my blog.
http://justalittlezizzy.blogspot.com/2008/02/strings.html
I have sent you an E-mail with a picture of my ironing board. You can also see it on my blog.
Now that is a scrap bin! For some reason, I end up being a pattern stasher and not as much a fabric collector. But I sure would love scraps like that to dip into when I found a cool scrappy quilt!
Your dog is adorable!
I think you did a great job on the scrap pile!
I will have a picture of my ironing board in my blog for you!
OK - finally got my ironing board picture posted today - Wednesday. Not at all scary at the moment - but what is hiding under that relatively new cover is enough to make the most hardy quilter shiver in fear LOL!
Hi Libby! Paula sent me over to officially play and enter the game;) I had already posted on my ironing boards after reading her post. My little sewing room has had homemade ironing board covers for 30 years. Two and a half yards makes two covers lengthwise and all they need is a casing all the way around and a piece of elastic pulled through and knotted to size! When I've been in a super hurry (like you may be)toss some fabric ontop and giftwrap fold underneath and pin down. You can do it! Thanks for such a good chuckle! Love your honesty!!!
Wow -- a whole lot of cutting. And a reminder that I need to do some of that myself soon! UGH. I have the feeling it's going to be a week or so project! As for the ironing board, I'll have to get a photo up on my blog tomorrow. Right now it's buried in stuff. Most of it not quilting or sewing related stuff! UGH.
I've posted a before and after picture of my ironing board! It was pretty bad before ! Thanks!
WOW on your scraps! You are on tops of things now!
The Prairie book looks interesting. I might have to pick that up!
As for your iron board cover, what are you looking for? Maybe we can find it else where?
I posted my iron board and have seen some great ideas with other bloggers sharing theirs - this was a great idea! Thanks!
Hi Libby: If Blogger is feeling compliant I will post my " ironing corner" in a moment. A word of explanation - my mode as a quilter is - the more barefoot the better - so if I can't iron it with my thumb or with my $10 iron and a bath towel spread on the worktable, it doesn't happen!
Bravo on the scrap management - I noved a huge amount off the table and into a basket this morning! I fancy 2.5 inch blocks and have a biscuit tin full - time to use them!
Janet in cold,dank Nova Scotia
I think my ironing board looks as nice as yours, a lot of brown on it too. But as long as it works, I could not care less. I saw somewhere on a blog a tutorial to change the board cover and it looked very easy. Have I done it myself? No! There are more important things, right! I don´t think I will make it to post a picture on my blog til tomorrow but I wish good luck to the others for the drawing.
You are not bookable to cut up scraps from overflowing baskets, are you? Take care.
Well I have posted pictures of mine - three in all... Solvi in Norway
You are not going to believe this but I have a second post about my ironing board! *g* It's a tutorial on how to make a home-made 'big board'
Judging by the look of your board cover, yours gets some pretty heavy duty usage. I posted pics of my ironing table back at the end of January on my blog. Mine looks brand new in comparison, lol. I don't know how I ever managed with a normal size ironing board for my quilting.
I posted a picture of by ironing board today.
This was fun!
It's been great fun seeing everyone's ironing boards all over blogland. I posted mine tonight. Mine is in pretty good shape. A little scorched, but not bad. It's one of my favorite quilting tools. :cD
It`s a funny challenge, Libby! Thanks! I just uploaded my ironing board.
Last week I surched for my scraps and I found that I have to iron a lot of time because they are very rumbled........
I love the book and I have also some projects I would like to make so I`m looking forward to see what you`ve done.
Libby,
I've seen so many posting about their ironing boards that I decided to join in the fun! I've got more than one since I'm lazy.
I've been working hard to use up my scraps also. I posted my ironing board on my blog. What a fun idea!!
My picture of my ironing board is up at http://everlastingmercy.blogspot.com/
Come take a look! I would like to be entered in your give-away. Thanks!
You inspired me making a scrap quilt too. I have a picture of my ironing board on my blog. You can see a board cover which I put on after ironing. It's an antique redwork.
Nice scrap pile! I should show my scraps lol I barely have a pile (a little baggy is about it!) yet. I know, I just started though so over time Im sure it will take over my fabric space :o)
I added a photo of my work area and ironing board. When I started quilting I went out and bought a new iron and a new board cover. Im hoping it lasts me some time! Because my ironing board is standard, it's easy for me to walk into walmart and grab a new one :o)
My old ironing board cover was terrible! I wish now that I hadnt thrown it away so I could get a picture of it. Think of this - an 11 year old cover, full of stains and wearing very thin. My husband always had to put a worn out shirt over the cover to iron anything. I had even washed it, but it only made it worse!
Oh I liked your sorting process. I am always having issues myself with scraps. My picture of iron board is posted. Enjoy.
I figured by now...you'd have shown a finished quilt from the things you cut last week! Can't wait to see what you post.
Wow talk about cutting it close lol!!! But I got my picture up!! I had forgotten until I was putting up a picture of a Cath Kidston ironing board cover that I want and then I thought I had missed it I thought it was 8:00 a.m. then I was reading another blog and saw the p.m. whew!!
