The 'Adventures In Appliances' is just about to come to a close. This will bring about a minor celebration to our home this evening. You may remember this post where we found it difficult to spend our hard earned cash at a nationally known appliance retailer.
I did return for my 'Julia Roberts' moment with the store manager. As it turns out, the sales staff does not fall far from the tree. As I retold my tale to the store manager, I was only barely able to hold his interest. So my 'moment' wasn't so satisfactory. I did sent a message to the corporate headquarters and feel that there I was heard. I'll never know for sure if any of the parties involved faced any repercussions, but I do feel that I did what I could to get the information to the proper parties.
And still you can see that more than a month has passed and even with great help from a retail competitor, we are just now receiving delivery of the last two items. Why, you ask. Because I have committed the kitchen decorating faux pas of the new millennium in purchasing white appliances. Oh, I know stainless steel is all the rage and every well appointed kitchen is decked out to the hilt with the latest in its gray shiny wonder. Ah - but as a teen I did more than my fair share of polishing that dread surface at the local McDonald's. Enough to last a couple of lifetimes, thank you very much. So for this Simple Girl nothing would do but plain and ordinary white - which are now a special order.
Was it worth the wait? You betcha. I'm running through my head all the things I plan to bake in the coming week. Soup will be simmering on the stovetop, the dishwasher will be leaving my utensils sparkly clean.
This morning while the gas line was being installed for the range, I prepped this piece for the applique. The pattern can be found in the latest AP&Q magazine. I was lucky to locate a box labeled 'quilt scraps' in the basement and found all that I needed to put it together.
Now I have something to keep my hands busy while I wait for the dishwasher to be installed this afternoon.

I did the same thing you did when we bought our current house--HAD to have white appliances. I've had the stainless before and frankly, never could see what all the hype was about! And gas range--woo hoo--only thing I'll have--ever!!!! Okay, now get cookin'!

Way to go there Betty Crocker! Keep in mind when you're baking up a storm that I prefer chocolate :-)
I cannot believe white is special order - what is the world coming to I ask you??

Love the applique project. I am moving into my very first home right now and is was renovated this spring including all new appliances. My friend saw the place last night and said, "you can replace the appliances in a year or so". I just looked at her and laughed, saying, "they are brand new" and she couldn't figure out why they black instead of stainless. Funny how we perceive things. White would have been great too in my place.

So the sales manager has mastered the fine art of BS, huh? And his minions are still apprentices. Sometime I'll have to share my Sears appliances story with you.

I can't believe white is now a special order. The appliances in the kitchen we have now are black, except the fridge that I just had moved into the kitchen in April. Actually, I think I like the black even better than the white; doesn't show much dirt or grease at all.

I'm envious--stuck here in the hospital room occasionally while J-Man is in a test and no handwork to keep me occupied. Good thing we bought this little mini-computer last January so I can at least come read blogs.

I understand that there is newer stainless steel appliances with no finger prints kind of finish. I don't know a thing about them.

I once was in a major retailer looking to make a purchase. The two available salesmen got into a verbal fight just as I entered the department. They were fighting over a sale. One said the other stole his sale. Commissions I am sure was the problem. Anyhow, they ignored me so long that I went to the front desk and asked for the manager. The manager helped me with my purchase. I am sure those two men heard a word or two from the store manager.

Isn't that goofy that white is now special order? I'm with you, I don't like stainless. My stove and dishwasher are black and, talk about faux pas, my refrigerator is Almond!

I like the new applique--your colorway is better than the one in the mag :)

White appliances are now special order! Who knew??? I love my stainless steel fridge, but the poor dear rarely gets polished. We like the "rustic" look! Your little quilt is adorable. What a treat to find quilts by Lynda, Renee, and Cherie in the latest APQ!

Oh, cute applique. Your kitchen is going to be gorgeous with all new appliances. Can't understand that company being so uninterested in customer service.

I remember when Harvest Gold was the rage in the 70's and then it was almond in the 80's. So I think stainless will run its course, and people will find that you are right in that it's a pain in the neck. Give me plain old white anyday; it's a classic. Hope things are going well with the settling in. Soup on the stove and baking in the oven will help.

I'm so glad I'm not alone! When we renovated our kitchen a few years ago, I opted for all white appliances too. I still love them! Enjoy your new kitchen!

In my humble opinion, white is classic! I really am surprised that is special order these days.

I have my pieces cut for the same applique. I am doing most of it in wool. It reminds me of a Patridge in a Pear Tree, but I don't think it looks much like a partidge:)
I like your background!

That is funny, I guess no one buys white any more. I am into black, but not cleaning it, every little smudge shows.

Love your new piece, will have to check out the magazine section, next time I am in.

I thought I had the no-smudge finger-print-less stainless but it still needs a daily wipe. My DH and I can't figure out where the smudges come from - surely it's not him. (LOL) Anyway, I think white would have been a better choice! I love your fabric choices for the applique - nicer than the picture in the magazine I think. Yours has a little zip to it. Have fun with your new stuff!

Good for you writing to headquarters. I would have done the same.

I am so with you on the white appliances while stainless is pretty it is such a pain to clean.

Glad you are finally going to have your kitchen finished.

I still don't have an oven. But I have 400 pounds of beef. I went to Nebraska yesterday to collect the side I ordered. Thank goodness for crockpots and other small appliances: that is the only way I'll be able to cook a roast until I get a new oven.

White is the only way to go, IMHO! I love my white appliances against my beautiful hickory cabinets! Stainless is to industrial for me, not "homey" enough. Can't wait to see some pics of the new kitchen! :~)

OMG! When did plain white become special order? I love plain white!

Love your applique project. It's a good thing you labeled your boxes well!

Good for you for getting the color of appliances you wanted and not what is "in" ...

I love gas for cooking as well!

I don't mind the stainless fridge I have, but I would have guessed you more for a black or almond gal with all the warm colors you like. White is lovely too. I had NO idea white was now special order! I thought white, black and stainless were just the regular choices!

I loved this applique project. I just finished one in brights (the top - not quilted yet) and am just beginnning the same pattern in reproductions. Can't wait to see how yours turns out.
